What is immersion cooling?

Immersion cooling, or liquid submersion as it is also called, is the use of dielectric coolants to achieve a cooling effect in electronic parts such as computer processors, TVs, etc. Dielectric coolants are thermally conductive (transfer heat) but do not conduct electricity.

Why do bitcoin miners use immersion cooling?

As the miner puts in more work, heat and noise levels in standard air-cooled mining rigs rise. On the other hand, immersion cooling bitcoin miners provide absolute noise reduction. This is due to the fact that the fans, which are the main noise generators, are taken out before immersion. Bitcoin miners that use liquid cooling are also dust-free.

What liquids are used in immersion cooling?

Therefore, the fluids used in immersion cooling are dielectric liquids to ensure that they can safely come into contact with energized electronic components. In general, the dielectric liquids used for immersion cooling fall into two categories: hydrocarbons (i.e. mineral, synthetic, or biological oils) and fluorocarbons (fully engineered liquids).

Why do mining rigs need immersion cooling?

Immersion cooling also allows for easier overclocking of the ASIC, a practice that involves increasing the terahashes per second (TH/s) of the mining rig, but will similarly increase power consumption and heat generation. Without a means to properly mitigate the additional heat load, the ASIC may become unreliable or fail entirely.
